US Chamber of Commerce Calls for an “Overhaul” of Venezuelan Sanctions

Recent ‘opposition’ to sanctions placed on Venezuela has nothing to do with the humanitarian and economic costs of such practices, but everything to do with American interests.

On September 9, 2021, the Senior Vice President of the US Chamber of Commerce Neil Herrington authored a letter detailing the necessity of altering the “maximum pressure” sanctions placed on the country and its populace by former President Donald Trump. The negative effects from the economic war being waged on Venezuela have been widely reported on, including but not limited to a still-stagnant oil sector, the amount of human suffering caused by the sanctions themselves, and more.

In early August of this year, several social democratic politicians in the United States called on the Biden administration to lift the “broad and indiscriminate sanctions” against the country. This stems from the utter failure of imperialist Trump-era foreign policy against Venezuela and the fraudulent talking points surrounding the supposed “threat” that Venezuela poses to the national security of the United States.
